Module 3 - Transforming Health Care in Ekiti State and Nigeria - A Focus on Women's Health
The Sustainable Development Goals 9SDG) aims to accelerate the decline of maternal mortality by 2030 by “ “reducing the global MMR to less than 70 per 100 000 births, with no country having a maternal mortality rate of more than twice the global average”. (WHO, Fact Sheet)
Maternal Death Fact Sheet of the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that about 99% of maternal deaths take place in women in rural areas and poor communities in developing nations like Ekiti State in Nigeria.
In fact 20% of all global deaths happen in Nigeria. This is the primary reason and need to cause a change that would impact the inhabitants of Nigeria starting in Ekiti State. Of note, a Nigerian woman has a1 in 22 risk of ding during pregnancy, childbirth of post-partum while in the US, that risk is 1 in 4900.
This inequity needs to be fixed to improve the social wellbeing in the country. As such, there is a need to focus on the Maternity and Child care service in Nigeria for effective transformation of women’s health.
